Hitler knew that he had to send a fleet of landing craft across the channel. But he could not defend his landing craft while Britain had an air force with fighter aircraft. The RAF would simply destroy the landing craft while they were crossing the channel.
The Germans believed they could destroy the RAF because they had far more planes than Britain.The first target of the Germans was the British airfields, for without airfields the British planes could not take off.
