As soon as war was declared, Hitler ordered his troops into many European countries. The British had an army in Europe, but the Germans were too strong and the army had to retreat and be rescued from the beaches at Dunkirk in Belgium.
Hitler had quickly overrun his neighbours using fast tanks. This was called blitzkrieg, or lightning warfare. But Hitler could not do the same against Britain, for the English Channel stood in the way.
