The Second World War started on September 3rd 1939.
In the years before this, Germany had been taken over by the Nazi party under Adolf Hitler.
The Nazis wanted to get more land and so they invaded their neighbours.
Britain had an agreement with Poland, that if Poland was attacked, Britain would go to her aid. So when Germany invaded Poland, Britain went to war.
