The story starts with the First World War that lasted between 1914 and 1918.
Germany and her partners and Britain and her allies had fought themselves to a standstill in long trenches that had been dug across northern France.
Eventually, all sides agreed to a peace. The Germans thought they had fought an honourable war, but the treaty blamed them, and asked them to pay huge sums of money to the allies. They thought this was unfair.
