The only way to deal with the shortage of workers was to get women to do the jobs men had done.
Remember, at this time married women did not work and most single women worked in service, as maids and so on – they did not even work in shops.
Now it was all change, as women learned how to do the jobs their men had done.
Others, such as the Scouts, were urged to do chores, too.
