Everyone was proud of their troops going off to fight a war of honour. But as soon as they had gone it became obvious that there were few people left to do all the jobs men had once done.
A few jobs needing hard labour – such as mining – were so important, that men from the mines were not allowed to join up. But jobs in farming and in factories as well as in shops and on public transport were all desperately short of people.
