During the 1980s many young businesspeople found their lives so busy, they had to try to write down everything they were doing. To meet this demand, and to give them a stylish, must-have, item, the personal organiser was invented. The leading brand was Filofax (which had nothing to do with fax machines, it was simply a ring-binder). All kinds of accessories were developed for it, just as they are for iPods today. The organiser was largely replaced by laptops and 'Blackberries', some years later.
