During the 1980s fashion changed in two ways: business women became more important, and they showed this by wearing padded shoulder jackets to their working suits. These became known as 'power suits'. At the same time, people at home became more informal and wore athletics-style gear. Even older people joined in this trend; something they had not done before. This was because shops sold fewer and fewer traditional clothes. This was also the beginning of the 'designer clothes' age.
