Buying homes

Screen 5/9

Q: Why did more people own their own homes?

During the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher's government put in place a scheme to allow people who lived in council houses to buy their own homes. This gave less wealthy people a chance to buy a stake in the place they lived in instead of just renting it.

At the same time, it became easier to borrow money for a house (get a mortgage) and as a result, there was a great boom in house sales – and prices.
