During the 1980s a range of new electronic devices began to appear. This is when the video cassette recorder (VCR) started to be used by people to record their favourite programmes.
Mobile phones also began to appear, although at this time coverage was very poor and the phones were very expensive. It would take another twenty years for the phone network to be good, but a start was already under way in the '80s.
