Q: What difference did city motorways make?

During the 1970s and into the 1980s people found something curious happening. Many perfectly good houses were being knocked down to make way for gigantic roads that were being put into the hearts of the cities.

These were called urban motorways, inner ring roads and the like. They allowed motorists to drive quickly across cities, but they also split the cities up into pieces, making it much more difficult for people to get about locally, especially on foot.
