Ugandan Asians

Screen 5/9

Q: Why did many Ugandan Asians come to the UK in 1972?

Uganda had been a British colony and after independence in 1962, a member of the Commonwealth. But all was not well in Uganda, and the leader, Idi Amin, began a racial attack against the people of Asian origin, who were mostly hard-working businesspeople and government officials.

Uganda needed the Asians to keep the country running, but Amin wanted them ethnically cleansed. So he expelled them. In 1972 over 50,000 Asian Ugandans were expelled and many fled to the UK.
