In the 1960s many people had a good time. It was called the 'Swinging Sixties'. The Second World War was now far behind and there had been peace for nearly 20 years.
But in the background not all was well. There was a 'Cold War'– a war of words and threats – between the Soviet Union (which we now call Russia) and the western allies led by the United States and Britain. It was a time when both sides stockpiled nuclear weapons – just in case.
