At the start of the 1950s, people were still buying goods on ration and everyone was poor.

By the end of the 1950s people were buying televisions and carpeting their floors.

This may not sound much, but people were once again full of confidence and starting to enjoy life. They had recovered from the bad years of the war. In the 1960s they would do much better.
