Q: How did the name 'teenager' come about?

Before the 1950s, young people did not think about fashion in the way they do today. Fashion was something older people and film stars worried about.

In Victorian times, for example, children gave any wages they earned to their parents, had hand-me-down clothes and looked like little adults. Now young people kept most of what they earned and had money to spend on fashion clothes. The shops recognised this and coined a new term for them: teenagers.
