At the start of the 1950s you could look around the cities and find huge bombsites that had not been rebuilt after the war. Rationing and hardship continued.
But things were changing. People were beginning to enjoy life and the government helped by organising the Festival of Britain in 1951. It showed a world of modern designs and space age shapes (even though the Space Age had not begun). Above all, it brought colour to a drab world.
