Q1: What is a heat island?

[Answer]

The bigger the city and the closer together the buildings, the more the weather differs from that in the surrounding countryside.

The two big differences are in wind and temperature. In a city center the tall buildings act like giant fences, shielding the city from the wind.

The city is also warmer than its surroundings because of heated buildings and motor cars, and because the tightly packed streets do not let the heat escape.
