A sewage works takes waste water from houses, schools, offices, factories and makes it clean and safe enough to be put back into a river. Unless it is specially treated with extra treatments, this water is not treated sufficiently to make it safe to drink, although most water leaving a sewage works is safe.
The water entering a sewage works is mostly waste from toilets and sinks. It is usually tan-coloured and smells!
