A water treatment works takes water from a river, a lake, a reservoir or from out of the ground, and makes it clean and safe enough for use. The water may appear to be clean even before it is treated. As a result, the incoming water does not look very different from the outflowing water. The most important thing that is done is to make sure the water contains no harmful microbes.
