Cities grow out from the center, so the center of a city is the oldest part.
Fine, old buildings are called 'historic buildings'. They show us the best of what people did in the past. In many cities now, fine, old parts of the center are made into conservation areas, so these buildings can be preserved.
Many old buildings do not sit idle, but can be put to many good uses.
