The first places where people lived were very small, just a few huts. They were always in the country because people needed to grow crops and keep animals just to feed themselves.
Some places are still small. If they have just a few shops (or even none at all) we call them villages. Most have less than 5000 people in them. But most people who live in them are no longer farmers.
