scree
Broken fragments of rock that have been shattered from mountains by winter frosts.
Scree is one of the common sights of steep mountain areas. In summer, rain seeps into the cracks in the bare rocks of the mountains, and then in winter it freezes. As water turns to ice, it expands and breaks some of the rock from the mountain.
When the ice melts, this frost-shattered rock falls down the steep mountainsides, and builds up against the foot of the slope.
