fjord

A fjord (pronounced fee-ord) is a deep, narrow, flooded river estuary in a mountain region. It was eroded during the last Ice Age.

Fjords have such steep sides that rivers entering them often create spectacular waterfalls. Fjords are also extremely deep.

In some parts of the world a fjord is called a sound.
