finger lake, ribbon lake
A long lake that takes on the shape of a glaciated valley. Most lakes fill hollows in valleys scoured out by ancient glaciers. Some also have dams of moraine at their ends.
Finger lakes in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
These are the finger lakes of Buttermere (foreground) and Crummock Water in the English Lake District. Notice the steep sides of the valley, showing that it has been glaciated.
