An alluvial fan is a cone of debris that builds up where a river flows out of a deep mountain valley onto a plain.

Because the water is no longer confined to a narrow path, it becomes wider and shallower and so cannot carry as much material. The larger pebbles quickly settle out and they build up to make the cone.
