An estuary is a drowned river valley in a coastal lowland area.

Drowning occurs either because the land is sinking or due to a world-wide rise in sea level such as happened after the last Ice Age. The picture above shows the estuary of the Parana River in South America. This is one of the world's largest estuaries.
