A river bar is a long and narrow ridge of underwater sand and gravel like a submerged island.

River bars are a hazard where barges and other river craft are in danger of going aground. As a consequence, river bars are often removed by dredging. The Mississippi and the Rhine have many river bars. They are a significant hazard at times of low water, such as winter (for the Mississippi) and summer (for the Rhine).
