We can expect many days of floods in winter because the soil is full of water. In summer we may get a flash flood from a violent rainstorm.
If we live on clay soils or hard rocks that can't soak up water, we can expect more floods than if we live on rocks like chalk that can soak up the water better.
If we live off the floodplain, however, we will never get flooded.
