Flash floods

Most floods take time to develop and people get lots of warning - even if they can't stop the flooding. They mostly occur in winter.

Sometimes, however, a burst of heavy rain is too much for the soil to handle and the water rushes over the surface to rivers and causes a sudden flood - a flash flood. These are most serious in narrow, steep-sided valleys.
