How much land is flooded?

A river floods over its floodplain. The floodplain is nearly flat, so the area of flooding can be large.

Generally, the bigger the flood, the deeper the depth of flood water and the larger the area affected.

Some rivers build up natural walls known as levees. Then the river flows above its floodplain. If these walls fail, flooding is widespread.
