Country floodplain

A floodplain is a wide strip of nearly flat land that runs beside each middle river.

The river is normally low down in a channel cut into the floodplain, but during a flood the river rises quickly and spills onto the floodplain.

During floods the river is carrying sand and mud and it drops this on the floodplain, adding new soil. This is why floodplain soils are good for farming.
