Cracks let water in

This is a place called Malham in Yorkshire. There's no soil on this rock, so you can see what it's like. It's a light grey coloured rock called limestone. Notice the rock is criss-crossed by deep cracks. Each crack marks the edge of a block of limestone.

When rain trickles through the cracks it dissolves the sides of the blocks away, making the cracks wider.
