Remember that most rainforest trees grow together very closely and only send out leaves and flowers into the canopy.
Many animals fly to the canopy. This is where insects feed on pollen and nectar. It is also where many trees produce their fruit, so it is also where you find birds and bats and even large animals such as monkeys.
This is why you can hear birds like parrots, but you cannot see them they are in the canopy high above you.
