Q1: How can understorey trees survive?

[Answer]

The forest below the canopy is dim. If trees are to survive here, they have to be able to make use of every bit of light.

They do this in two ways: they grow slowly and they mainly have large leaves that can gather up the light more effectively.

Some of the trees in the understorey are baby canopy trees. They cannot grow up until one of the canopy trees dies and falls down.
