Because the landscape and climate vary over just small distances, people living in mountains have learned to build their towns and villages where the conditions are best in winter.
This does not just mean choosing a site free from spring floods. Or a site that is sunniest (and so warmest). But they also needed to choose a place that is safe from winter avalanches.
