The hardest time to survive in the mountains is during winter, when it's very cold and snow is deep.

In the past, when there were no freezers, double glazing or central heating, people had to build special homes that stayed warm and provided shelter for them and their animals.

You see them in the Alps, where homes called chalets are very practical indeed.
