Q1: Why are there fewer animals on mountains than in valleys?

[Answer]

Mountain animals are often seasonal visitors who move away during the harshest parts of winter.

Those that stay over winter must be very hardy or bury themselves away and sleep (hibernate) through the harshest days.

Because mountain plants grow slowly, they produce less food for animals, so animals are not as common on mountains as in valleys.
