The uppermost part of high mountains is too high, and so too cold, for trees.

Just above the tree line some grasses and similar plants can grow during the short seasons. They die back in winter. This is a meadow zone.

Only the smallest and hardiest plants can survive in the highest zone. They grow slowly in sheltered areas between the rocks. They're called alpines.
