See how ice can scrape away valleys and mountains.

This is an activity you should do with the help of your parents or other responsible adult. You should not do this on your own.

You are going to make ice cubes that are a model of the bottom of a glacier. All glaciers have rock embedded in their undersides. We are going to make ice cubes with sand in as a model.

Get an ice-cube tray and place some sand in the bottom. Just enough to cover the bottom.

Fill the rest of the tray with water and then pop it in the freezer.

Take the frozen cubes out and prise the cubes from the tray.

Push the sandy side of the ice cubes over a piece of old, unwanted glass or plastic. Do not use glass you will want to use again. You will see that the sand quickly scratches the glass or plastic, so you can imagine how much can be done by a huge glacier over tens of thousands of years.

The scraping action is called abrasion.
