Many mountains are not entirely covered with glaciers. Instead, the peaks remain above the ice. As a result, they are not ground down by scraping rock.
But being open to the sky means that any rain seeps into cracks in the rock. When it gets cold again this water freezes, swells and breaks the rock off in flakes. In time this makes the peaks sharp-sided.
