To prevent the loss of seaside homes, sea walls and many other kinds of sea defences are built.
A sea wall takes the full force of the storm waves, but they are very expensive to build and in time, just like cliffs, they will be washed away and so need frequent rebuilding.
Beach fences – groynes – hold beach sand in place. They look ugly, but a wide beach is a good way to soak up the energy of storm waves.
