Baton Rouge, which is French for “Red Post”, is the second-largest city in Louisiana. It was founded beside the eastern bank of the Mississippi River on first natural bluff (ledge of high ground) upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. This meant it was safe from seasonal flooding.
Nevertheless, like other places around the Gulf coast, it is subject to the effects of hurricanes.
Baton Rouge is an industrial city, based now on petrochemicals using oil and gas from the Gulf of Mexico. The Port of Baton Rouge is the ninth largest, by tonnage, in the United States.
Its importance down the ages is testified by the fact that it was always a prize in the colonial era. It has
