Sacramento, the capital city of California
the United States.
The city was named after the
Sacramento River. The river was named by Spanish cavalry officer Gabriel Moraga for the Santísimo Sacramento (Blessed Sacrament).
Before the arrival of Europeans, the area where Sacremento is was home to the Nisenan Native Americans.
When Europeans began to colonise the Americas, the western coast of North America became part of the
Alta California province of New Spain. However, although the Spanish had set up a string of missions along the coast,
