The new Arkansas Territory held its territorial government at the territorial capital, Arkansas Post. However, Arkansas Post had been set up centuries before as a trading post and was not suitable as a site for the new territorial, and then state capital.
The State House was built in 1836 and served as home of state government until the Arkansas State Capitol opened in 1912.
Little Rock is now a significant distribution center for the state, with a range of services.
