missionaries chose to build on the site of an old Arikara Indian village called Ti Tanke Ohe, later shortened to “Oahe.” The mission then adopted the name of the Indian village. The Oahe Chapel is the remaining building associated with the Oahe Mission and one of the most famous building of Pierre.
The capitol was completed in 1910 based on a design for the Montana Capitol. It has a copper dome and Corinthian columns
In the main street, the business district also developed some fine Victorian buildings. Built in 1884, The Central Block was one of the first masonry commercial blocks erected in Pierre. It is one of the few remaining historic buildings within the city’s original commercial district.
In 1907 the first permanent Missouri River railroad crossing was completed. Before the building of the railroad bridge, people crossed the river between Pierre and Fort Pierre by
pontoon bridges, steamboats, and by walking across the ice in the winter.
Pierre is still not connected by an Interstate, the nearest being 34 miles south.
