Providence, which is at the mouth of the Providence River where it empties into Narragansett Bay, is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is the third-largest city in New England after Boston and Worcester. Providence itself is part of the Greater Boston commuting area.
The Providence River is formed by the joining of the ] formed by the confluence of the Moshassuck and Woonasquatucket Rivers, and then runs into the bay through the center of the city.
Providence was founded by Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He named the area in honor of “God’s merciful Providence”, which he believed was responsible for revealing such a haven for him and his followers to settle.
