to get away from the modern world and do their own work in peace. The most famous of these was Georgia O’Keeffe, although, seeking seclusion, she lived outside of the city. The creatives were also fascinated by the Pueblo Indian pottery and helped to develop it into a craft industry.
In 1912, New Mexico became the United States of America’s 47th state, with Santa Fe as its capital.
By 1912, there were just 5,000 people in Santa Fe. But it was about to become a state capital, and there were many living there who could see this might result in the ruin of the history, as it had in other cities. As a result, they set out a plan to keep the historic district, retain the city as small, not
try to make it grow quickly. It was also at this time they set out the guiding principle that new building must be in the )adobe) traditional style so they did not conflict with the historic past.
The fact that it had become popular with the famous creatives of the day, and that the city still kept much of its historic past, allowed the city
to begin to advertise it as a place for tourists in the very early days of tourism. Santa Fe today is primarily a retirement and tourism city. Santa Fe has been designated as a UNESCO Creative City in Design, Crafts and Folk Art.
In 1943 the Los Alamos National Laboratory for nuclear physics was set up, some 45 minutes from the city. The laboratory was founded during World War II as a secret, centralized facility to coordinate the scientific research of the Manhattan Project, the Allied project to develop the first nuclear weapons. The intention was to have a central laboratory at an isolated location for safety, and
to keep the scientists away from the population
for security reasons. It had to be at least 200
miles from international boundaries and west of the Mississippi. In 1984, the Santa Fe Institute
was founded to research range of sciences. The National Center for Genome Resources was founded in 1994 to work on biology. Following that several technology companies grew up to turn the science into useful things. This group of companies has been called the “Info Mesa”.
