This area was, by chance, also near to Yellowstone National Park, and as tourism became more popular, and railroads reached the area. In 1889, railroad magnate Charles Arthur Broadwater opened his Hotel Broadwater and Natatorium west of Helena. It had the world’s first indoor swimming pool.
Until the 1900s, Helena was the biggest city in the state. Butte then took over as the biggest settlement as people flocked there to work in the new mining industry. Mining still continues in the area around Helena.

Of course, the mining boom is long gone and now the people of Helena mainly work in services or for the state government. Helena is now also a base for many tourists visiting the mountains and its national parks. There is also a local ski area, Great Divide Ski Area, northwest of the city.
