Railroad track and Robert Street Bridge from Raspberry island. Downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota.
Basilica in Rome. This unsupported marble dome is the second largest in the world, after Saint Peter’s. The capitol was finished in 1905, with its marble granite cladding.
With both Saint Paul and Minneapolis growing fast, the
cities began to take on distinctive roles. Minneapolis was the manufacturing city, while Saint Paul was about trade and finance. In 1906 the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (now known as 3M) moved its headquarters from Duluth to close to Saint Paul. This, and other growing businesses, put up new and substantial offices to make the downtown area of Lowertown. In 1924 the Ford Motor Company opened the Twin Cities Assembly Plant on a the site on the Mississippi River beside a company- owned dam that generated hydroelectric power. Recently Ford’s plant has closed as manufacturing changes and becomes more high tech.
