Lansing, which lies beside the Grand River, is naturally a region of dense forests. The area was home to Native Americans for thousands of years before the first recorded European visit. That was by explorer Hugh Heward in 1790 while canoeing the Grand River.
As part of the great westward migration of Europeans in
the early years of the 19th century, Lansing was surveyed as a possible site for a township in 1827, and was offered for sale in 1830. However, at this time it was a settlement by the river within the forest, and not connected to any other place by overland trails.
In 1835 two brothers from New York from Lansing, New York, were the first to plot for land sales. The place they had chosen was on the floodplain and subject to flooding, but no one in New York was to know that. It was a scam. Sixteen people bought plots,
